A young man was fatally shot in front of his twin brother in Manhattan on Wednesday. The place of crime was just feet away from their Inwood Hills Home. The man allegedly responsible for fatally shooting his neighbor, named Johnathan Rodriguez, was out on parole. The victim was a 20-year-old young man named Luis Dela Cruz.
Dela Cruz, an aspiring rapper, was shot in the legs on Thayer St. and Sherman Ave. in Inwood at about 9 p.m., while his brother and a group of friends watched in horror. A bullet tore through a major artery, killing him.
Dela Cruz and Rodriguez lived a block apart, cops said.
Their block is plagued by illegal drug trading and violence, but Dela Cruz’s friends said he wasn’t in a gang, and he had no criminal record.
Rodriguez’s record includes a a 2016 conviction for attempted weapon possession; he was released on parole in October 2018.
When he was arrested Tuesday, he was also hit with a slew of felony drug charges. An NYPD spokesman did not provide further details on those offenses, which involve possession of at least 10 pounds of marijuana, and at least 8 ounces of narcotics.
Rodriguez was arraigned Wednesday in Manhattan Criminal Court, where he was ordered held without bail.
