Woman Crush Wednesday: Phoebe Robinson Serves Honesty and Hilarity in Stand-Up Special ‘Sorry, Harriet Tubman’

Published

on

One of the scariest things about October is how quickly the month can fly by. But fear not, friends, because even though we are nearly halfway through haunting season already, we can at least take a moment to slow things down and press pause as we enjoy our weekly Woman Crush Wednesday. This week, we’re celebrating an incredible comedian, actress, podcaster, television writer, and New York Times best-selling author, who (as you may have already surmised) can pretty much do it all. She’s a hilarious hustler and a delightful human being, so if you somehow aren’t a fan already, that changes today! Give it up for your latest WCW, the fantastic Phoebe Robinson!

WHO’S THAT GAL: Phoebe Robinson

WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Robinson is releasing her first solo stand-up comedy special, Phoebe Robinson: Sorry, Harriet Tubman, exclusively on HBO Max this Thursday, October 14th, and we could not be more excited. The comedian’s hour-long special is a celebration of leaving quarantine and the craziness of the last year behind to get back onstage and share hilarious jokes and honest takes on everything from therapy to reparations to interracial dating to hangin’ with Michelle Obama. There’s so much to love about Robinson and her special, and so it’s no wonder why fans and publications like Cultured Magazine and The New York Times alike have been singing her praises lately.

Sorry, Harriet Tubman serves as a fitting spotlight on an exceedingly talented and hard-working woman who continues to carve a place for herself in the comedy sphere, entertainment industry, and overall cultural zeitgeist, so be sure to do yourselves a favor and watch Robinson’s superb special as soon as it drops this week, only on HBO Max.

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Robinson’s professional onscreen acting career began in 2014, when she appeared as Shenae in an episode of Comedy Central sitcom Broad City (though she had technically first appeared onscreen as herself in comedy series Still Standing with Ray Wagner in 2011, and continued to appear as herself doing comedy on various shows and panels from there). Her acting career continued to steadily build and grow from there, with roles in more television series like Co-operationNetflix Presents: The CharactersRachel Dratch’s Late Night Snack, and Search Party. It was 2016, however, that proved to be a breakthrough year for Robinson, as not only did she get her first major recurring role in a series whilst playing Suki in Amazon Prime Video comedy I Love Dick, but she also joined forced with Jessica Williams to create the comedy podcast 2 Dope Queens, which would eventually grow enough in popularity over its two year run to become a series on HBO from 2018 to 2019.

In the last several years, Robinson’s filmography has only continued to expand as she earned roles and appearances in more television series like BoJack HorsemanRobot Chicken, and Pandemica, and in feature films like 2017 comedy In Case of Emergency, 2018 romantic-comedy Ibiza, 2019 romantic-comedy What Men Want, and 2020 documentary Becoming, as well as even creating her own Comedy Central talk show series, Doing the Most with Phoebe Robinson.

You may also recognize Robinson’s name for her work writing for shows like White Guy Talk Show and Portlandia, or for her contributions to publications like GlamourELLE, and Vanity Fair, or for her blog Blaria, or her three books You Can’t Touch My Hair (And Other Things I Still Have to Explain), Everything’s Trash, but It’s Okay, and Please Don’t Sit on My Bed in Your Outside Clothes, or for creating her own production company, Tiny Reparations. You might even remember Phoebe as Decider’s own Orange Is The New Black Season 3 recapper! I mean seriously, what ISN’T she doing, at this point?! Robinson is clearly an exceptionally skilled and driven woman, and that relentless, exuberant spirit and effort have allowed her to kill it in everything from writing to acting to stand-up comedy. With all of these credits and accomplishments under her belt, we have no doubt that Robinson will continue to produce much more greatness for many years to come, and we absolutely can’t wait to see what she’ll do next.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: Luckily, you won’t have to wait too much longer to see more from Robinson, as she is set to act in upcoming romantic-comedy short film KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid, a comedy about overthinking a budding romance. You can also look out for TV series version of her book Everything’s Trash coming out on Freeform within the next year or two. For even more from Robinson in the meantime, you can keep up with her via her Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, podcast, and official website. Never miss a moment from this week’s wonderful WCW.

Actress Anne Heche, known for her roles in such films as Donnie Brasco, Volcano and I Know What You Did Last Summer, was involved in a fiery car crash in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles on Friday.

According to TMZ, Heche was driving a blue Mini Cooper and had first crashed into the garage of an apartment complex. Residents of the apartment complex tried to get her out of the vehicle but she backed up and sped off.

Footage of Heche speeding down the streets of her neighborhood had been obtained by TMZ as well as her initial encounter at the apartment complex.

In the first clip, you can hear her car crash towards the end. It has been reported that the actress crashed into someone’s home, causing her vehicle and the house to erupt into flames. Heche suffered severe burns and was resisting being taken away in a stretcher. You can also view footage of this via the TMZ article.

It has not been confirmed whether alcohol has been involved in the incident since her condition prevents doctors from performing any tests to determine if she was driving under the influence. She is currently intubated in the hospital but expected to live.

These are the vulgar license-plate requests the DMV has rejected

Published

Stay CL4SSY, New York!

The state Department of Motor Vehicles nixed 3,752 requests for vanity license plates in the last three years because it deemed them too raunchy, radical or simply ridiculous.

New York’s personalized plates go for $60 initially, and then $31.25 annually for renewal. You can get any plate as long as no one else has it and it’s not offensive.

Odds are a request for a plate that marks a wedding anniversary or shows your allegiance to a team — like METS86 — will pass muster with the DMV gatekeepers.

Vulgarity won’t get you to first base.

So plates with the phrase LFGM — the acronym for Pete Alonso’s “Let’s F–king Go Mets” rallying cry — did not make the cut.

And you won’t see anyone driving around with the custom plates MILFDAD, AS5M4N and WLHUNG.

The DMV also put NICEBUNS, FATFANNY, GOTAPOOP and BENDOVER in the rear-view mirror.

One player unsuccessfully tried to score the plate YESDADDY, to no avail.

The DMV also shot down such dark requests as DEADGIRL, GENOC1DE, S8TAN, DETONATE and MURDERM3.

Getting political is a dead end too — FJOEBIDN, FDTRUMP and CNNLIES were nixed.

LUDEDUDE, NARCO, GOT METH and BLUNT also went up in smoke.

Staten Island attorney Bill Dertinger said his blue 1995 Jaguar SJS was tagged with ESQLTD after his company and his 2014 Porsche had the plate GHOSTGTS because the sleek sportscar was white.

“The plates can make you stand out — which can be a curse or a blessing,” the 54-year-old Dertinger said. “Make sure you don’t cut anybody off.”

There must be a New York Jets fan playing referee at the DMV because a request for the seemingly innocent plate GASE was sidelined. Ex-Jets head coach Adam Gase had an offensive 9-23 win-loss record during his forgettable two-year tenure.

The DMV would not reveal who gives the final yea or nay.

“The DMV reviews all custom license plate requests and works hard to ensure that any combinations that may be considered objectionable are rejected,” said agency spokesman Tim O’Brien.

He said guidelines on what plate combinations are restricted can be found on the DMV website: https://dmv.ny.gov/learn-about-personalized-plates. Approximately 50,000 personalized and custom plates are sold per year, O’Brien said.
