Selena Gomez Shines in ‘Only Murders in the Building’

Published

on

Hulu‘s Only Murders in the Building is a satire, a mystery, and a loving portrait of three strangers becoming unlikely friends. Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez star as the strangers-turned-sleuths-turned-besties, and while folks are used to seeing comedy titans Martin and Short working together, Gomez’s casting feels like a curveball. The millennial celebrity, known for her singing, acting, producing, beauty line, and social media savvy, isn’t the first name you might associate with her seventy-something co-stars. But that’s sort of the magic of Selena Gomez in Only Murders in the Building. The actress more than holds her own against Martin and Short, proving that she has the talent and charisma to outlast trends and evolve into the future.

Only Murders in the Building is based on an idea that Steve Martin has been working on for years, although the original concept was for three aging “Broadway” actors. “The idea came almost immediately, that they lived in a building and they all were interested in crime. But they didn’t have the energy to go downtown, so they would only do murders in the building,” Martin told The New York Times. In the intervening years, however, the project changed. Martin Short suggested that the two of them could do it, but the question remained: who would be the third star? Concerned that adding a third older actor to the mix would make the top three leads seem too similar, Martin and his co-writer John Hoffman came up with the concept of Gomez’s Mabel, a young, street-smart woman who crashes into Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short)’s uniquely Upper West Side world.

Mabel might bring a jolt of youth and sarcasm to Charles and Oliver’s world, but Gomez comes across as a truly timeless talent like never before in Only Murders in the Building. Selena Gomez has always had the kind of career that has been tied to key pop culture moments, whether we’re talking about her work as a pint-sized child actor on Barney and Friends or her transition to full-on global pop star. Her creative choices — moving from the squeaky-clean world of Disney’s Wizards of Waverly Place to Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers — have often run parallel with the experiences of her own audience as they’ve grown up. Heck, she even took the universal challenge of being homebound during COVID-19 to launch her innovative “at home” cooking show, Selena + Chef.

So Gomez has long proven she has the range to excel at acting, singing, and producing. In Only Murders in the Building, though, she shows she’s more than just an icon of her generation. She is a talent for all generations.

In many ways, Mabel is one of the toughest roles to pull off in all of Only Murders in the Building. Everyone else, from Jayne Houdyshell’s Bunny to Amy Ryan’s Jan, fits into a very specific and familiar mold. A distinctly Upper West Side mold. But Mabel is an outlier. Younger than the average Beaux-Arts building tenant and clearly a loner in her own right, she resists easy labels. She’s smart enough to keep up with her older friends, self-deprecating when there’s cause for it, and sophisticated without seeming fussy. Moreover, she is full of her own traumatic secrets. Mabel’s past connection with murder victim Tim Kono and the Arconia in general are teased out as Only Murders treads on. Gomez has to be emotionally vulnerable enough to be relatable, enigmatic enough to sell Mabel’s mysteries, and quick enough with her comedy to keep up with Martin and Short. She has to be a comedy queen with a dash of noir. And Gomez pulls it all off.

Selena Gomez holds her own so well opposite Martin and Short you can’t help but hope she works with them forever. Her cool sarcasm provides a fun foil to Martin’s neurotic Charles and Short’s gregarious Oliver. Meaning, the comedy legends also come across as cooler and funnier because of Gomez’s performance. Together they make for a perfectly balanced triumvirate of comedy.

So if you’re wondering if Selena Gomez can keep up with two of the greatest comedians alive, the answer is a resounding yes. Moreover, there are times she puts them through their paces. Only Murders in the Building is a much better show because Selena Gomez is in it.

These are the vulgar license-plate requests the DMV has rejected

Published

Stay CL4SSY, New York!

The state Department of Motor Vehicles nixed 3,752 requests for vanity license plates in the last three years because it deemed them too raunchy, radical or simply ridiculous.

New York’s personalized plates go for $60 initially, and then $31.25 annually for renewal. You can get any plate as long as no one else has it and it’s not offensive.

Odds are a request for a plate that marks a wedding anniversary or shows your allegiance to a team — like METS86 — will pass muster with the DMV gatekeepers.

Vulgarity won’t get you to first base.

So plates with the phrase LFGM — the acronym for Pete Alonso’s “Let’s F–king Go Mets” rallying cry — did not make the cut.

And you won’t see anyone driving around with the custom plates MILFDAD, AS5M4N and WLHUNG.

The DMV also put NICEBUNS, FATFANNY, GOTAPOOP and BENDOVER in the rear-view mirror.

One player unsuccessfully tried to score the plate YESDADDY, to no avail.

The DMV also shot down such dark requests as DEADGIRL, GENOC1DE, S8TAN, DETONATE and MURDERM3.

Getting political is a dead end too — FJOEBIDN, FDTRUMP and CNNLIES were nixed.

LUDEDUDE, NARCO, GOT METH and BLUNT also went up in smoke.

Staten Island attorney Bill Dertinger said his blue 1995 Jaguar SJS was tagged with ESQLTD after his company and his 2014 Porsche had the plate GHOSTGTS because the sleek sportscar was white.

“The plates can make you stand out — which can be a curse or a blessing,” the 54-year-old Dertinger said. “Make sure you don’t cut anybody off.”

There must be a New York Jets fan playing referee at the DMV because a request for the seemingly innocent plate GASE was sidelined. Ex-Jets head coach Adam Gase had an offensive 9-23 win-loss record during his forgettable two-year tenure.

The DMV would not reveal who gives the final yea or nay.

“The DMV reviews all custom license plate requests and works hard to ensure that any combinations that may be considered objectionable are rejected,” said agency spokesman Tim O’Brien.

He said guidelines on what plate combinations are restricted can be found on the DMV website: https://dmv.ny.gov/learn-about-personalized-plates. Approximately 50,000 personalized and custom plates are sold per year, O’Brien said.
