Michael Sam on Jon Gruden’s emails: NFL will ‘crack down on bigotry’

Published

on

Michael Sam — the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team — broke his silence on the homophobic and racist emails sent by former Raiders head coach Jon Gruden, saying he expects to see an ensuing league-wide “crack down” on bigotry.

Sam, 31, was referenced in the hate-filled emails sent by the Super Bowl-winning coach first reported Monday by the New York Times, calling NFL commissioner Roger Goodell a gay slur while claiming he should not have pressured the Rams to select “queers” in the 2014 draft.

“They will definitely crack down on bigotry like that,” Sam said when asked how he hoped the NFL would respond to the controversy rocking the league, USA Today reported.

The former defensive end spoke during a webinar hosted Wednesday by Georgia’s Augusta University billed as a “Courageous Conversation with Michael Sam,” university officials said.

Sam characterized Gruden’s remarks as “unfortunate, especially that the first active gay player who’s playing is on the same team,” a reference to Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib, who came out in June.

Team officials said Wednesday Nassib stepped away from the Raiders to “process” the emails sent by his former coach sent between 2011 and 2018.

Gruden told the Las Vegas Review-Journal in June after Nassib came out in an Instagram video that he supported the five-year league vet.

“I learned a long time about what makes a man different is what makes him great,” Gruden texted the newspaper.

But Sam said Wednesday that Gruden’s public endorsement now rings hollow, USA Today reported.

“So it almost seems like, you know, how the whole team would rally around [Nassib], but again, it almost seems like it was just for show,” Sam said. “So are you really a part of it, or are you not? It’s moving in that direction, so if you’re not part of it, you need to find another profession.”

Sam, who was drafted in 2014 by the then-St. Louis Rams, was cut by the team months later. He then joined the Dallas Cowboys practice squad that fall before being cut again a month later, and he played in the Canadian Football League in 2015. He never appeared in a regular-season NFL game despite being a standout at the University of Missouri who was named the SEC’s co-defensive player of year in 2013.

Sam said there are other gay players throughout the league who don’t feel comfortable sharing their sexual orientation.

“I know guys who are struggling in the NFL and not able to come [out],” Sam said Wednesday.

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker make out backstage at ‘SNL’

Published

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker can now add “Saturday Night Live” to the list of places where they’ve passionately made out.

Several new photos shared by Kardashian on Instagram show the couple fooling around on a black leather couch while backstage for the show on Oct. 16, when Barker performed with musical guest Young Thug.

There’s clearly a lot to unpack in the pics, but one shows Kardashian, 42, laying across Barker’s lap as the two engage in a steamy kiss. Others show a shirtless Barker, 45, staring up at his girlfriend as she plays with his drumsticks.

Many fans also noticed that Barker had his hand planted firmly on Kardashian’s butt in all nine of the photos.

“You’re the best drummer I know 😍🥁,” the Blink-182 drummer commented on the post, to which Kardashian responded, “@travisbarker I learned from the best 😎.”

The outing seemed to be a full circle moment for the hot couple, who were the target of Kim Kardashian West’s hilarious “The People’s Kourt“ skit on “SNL” just one week earlier.

“Travis! Travis, baby, I have to do my show,” Kim said while impersonating Kourtney, as “SNL” cast member Mikey Day took on the role of Barker.

In more Kravis news, the two had a bit of a scare after Barker dropped his phone during a commercial flight on Friday.

As Page Six exclusively reported, a passenger told us that Kourtney was “frantically searching” for the phone and demanded “five more minutes” to look for it when a flight attendant asked her to take her seat so the plane could take off.

The eyewitness claimed that Barker stayed in his seat while his girlfriend was allegedly being “bratty” and “acting like a child.”

However, a source close to the Poosh founder denied the passenger’s story and said it “only took five minutes” for her to retrieve Barker’s phone.

Jay-Z due to testify in NYC lawsuit over ‘reneged’ perfume deal

Published

on

Rap mogul Jay-Z is expected to get grilled on the witness stand over claims he reneged on a deal to promote his own perfume.

The 51-year-old artist, whose real name is Shawn Carter, is named in a breach of contract lawsuit filed by Parlux Fragrances accusing him of failing to peddle the Gold Jay-Z fragrance line under a 2012 agreement.

Jury selection in the civil case begins Monday.

Parlux filed the lawsuit in Manhattan Supreme Court in 2016, claiming the “Empire State of Mind” rapper declined to push the perfume, including on “Good Morning America” and in Women’s Wear Daily. He’s also accused of refusing to do a promotional appearance at Macy’s.

The lawsuit claims it even pitched a contest involving a $20,000 perfume bottle with an 18-karat gold cap as the prize — only to have Carter reject the promotion and keep the prototype.

The company claims it lost $18 million in all because Carter allegedly didn’t live up to his end of the bargain — and names Carter and his company, S. Carter Enterprises, as defendants.

“The launch started out successfully and the product initially received rave reviews from Palux’s retailer customers,” the lawsuit, filed Jan. 25, 2016, says.

“However, in the fragrance industry, it is virtually impossible to sustain the success of a celebrity fragrance brand,” the lawsuit said, without “promotional support from the celebrity in the form of public appearances” and “regularly updating and refreshing the brand with ‘flanker’ launches and new line extensions.”

“Flanker” launches consist of “using new packaging, often new fragrance scents and some variation on the name of the originally launched brand,” the suit said.

Carter countersued, claiming he is still owed $2.7 million by Parlux in the deal.

The rapper already gave a video deposition in the case but at an Oct. 1 hearing, Judge Andrew Borrok said Parlux should call Carter as a live witness and “do this the old-fashioned way.”

Parlux attorney Anthony Viola said at the hearing that Carter would be his first witness.

“This should be sorted out pretty quickly now given the fact that Mr. Viola knows that I’m encouraging him to call the artist and the artist’s business manager,” Borrok said then. “So, the artist might be our first witness in the case if that’s what Mr. Viola chooses.”

It is unclear when the rapper will take the stand.

His attorney Alex Spiro declined to comment on the case Friday.

Parlux’s attorneys did not return a call seeking comment.

Gisele Bündchen throws Twitter into tizzy with Tom Brady ‘trade’ tweet

Published

on

Gisele Bündchen is getting in on the troll game.

Tom Brady tweeted on Saturday that he was “missing the fall this year,” perhaps reminiscing of the cool October days in New England instead of the heat in Tampa. But Bündchen didn’t let it go without poking some fun at her husband.

“Time for a trade?” Bündchen tweeted while quoting Brady’s original tweet.

The 44-year-old Brady is in his second season with the Buccaneers after spending the first 20 years of his career with the Patriots. He is doing just fine for himself in new surroundings, having won a Super Bowl in Tampa last February.

“Did I miss something?” Brady tweeted in response to Bündchen’s joke.

The tweets made in jest still got Twitter in a tizzy.

Brady made his return to Foxborough on Oct. 3, defeating Bill Belichick and the Patriots, 19-17.
