Miami futures offer intriguing college football bets amid team’s revival

Published

on

The offseason is the time to load up on futures for your portfolio for some opportunity to cash as the season progresses. While it may seem off-putting to tie up cash for the long haul, there are plenty of opportunities to build the bankroll with futures.

This week, I look at the Miami Hurricanes.

While I normally fade new coaches, let alone a whole new staff, I just can’t help but drool over the potential of the Hurricanes this season.

Loaded with talent, new head coach Mario Cristobal has been given the reins to make an instant impact in the ACC this season. With that said, I love the value of a season win total over.

Cristobal brings in a new offensive coordinator as well in Josh Gattis — a huge addition, as Gattis was the one who revived Michigan’s offense en route to a College Football Playoff berth. Establishing a dominant run game, Gattis will make a much-needed impact as Miami’s run game last season left plenty to be desired with no rusher eclipsing 600 yards.

The offense underperformed as a whole last season, finishing outside the top 75 in both success rate and finishing drives. Both are metrics that Gattis excelled in at Michigan.

While the run game may see an entire overhaul, the Canes have a familiar face returning at quarterback.

It’s safe the say the D’Eriq King era was a failure. Touted as a potential Heisman winner, King was one of the most electric quarterbacks in football at Houston. Miami was thrilled when he announced his transfer destination, only to be disappointed with injuries and a lack of production.

Luckily for the ’Canes, their backup, Tyler Van Dyke, exceeded expectations and cemented himself as their starter. Finishing last season with 2,931 yards and 25 touchdowns on a 62.3 percent completion percentage, Van Dyke will look to take another step forward with an open field if Gattis can unlock the run game.

Van Dyke ended the second half of the season on a high note, finishing top-10 in passing yards, touchdowns and big-time throws.

With the Hurricanes returning more than 65 percent of their offensive TARP, Van Dyke and company will look to put the ACC on notice.

Miami’s schedule outlook

With a season win total of 8.5, my focus shifted immediately to the over. A key factor to cashing a season win total over is by sneaking a win when going into the game as an underdog, and Miami has a prime opportunity to do that early in the season.

Miami opens the season with two non-conference opponents in Bethune-Cookman and Southern Miss. After an expected 2-0 start, it gets interesting when Miami goes against Texas A&M.

Texas A&M has questions at quarterback and could potentially be in a sleepy spot with Arkansas on deck in Week 4 (check out Collin Wilson’s full breakdown of Miami vs. Texas A&M game here).

With only Clemson left on the schedule as a potential decent-size favorite, we’re gifted plenty of room to cash the over with Miami only needing to go 9-3 — and there’s a hedge spot against Pitt in the last game of the season.

Verdict on Hurricanes

If Van Dyke can replicate his success and Gattis can boost the run game, Miami’s offense will be a force to be reckoned with. The defense will also look to take a step forward as it returns 79 percent of its unit from last season.

With stability on defense and boom potential on offense, I will confidently take a season win total over of 8.5, as Wilson has Miami at 9.39 and SP+ has the Canes at 8.72.

I will also put a piece on their division future, as the Coastal will be depleted as a whole with North Carolina’s Sam Howell and Pitt’s Kenny Pickett departing for the NFL.

The Turnover Chain may be dead, but Miami is in the midst of a revival.

Picks: Over 8.5 Wins (-115); Miami to win ACC Coastal (+150)

Actress Anne Heche Suffers Severe Burns After Crashing Car Into Los Angeles Home

Published

on

Actress Anne Heche, known for her roles in such films as Donnie Brasco, Volcano and I Know What You Did Last Summer, was involved in a fiery car crash in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles on Friday.

According to TMZ, Heche was driving a blue Mini Cooper and had first crashed into the garage of an apartment complex. Residents of the apartment complex tried to get her out of the vehicle but she backed up and sped off.

Footage of Heche speeding down the streets of her neighborhood had been obtained by TMZ as well as her initial encounter at the apartment complex.

In the first clip, you can hear her car crash towards the end. It has been reported that the actress crashed into someone’s home, causing her vehicle and the house to erupt into flames. Heche suffered severe burns and was resisting being taken away in a stretcher. You can also view footage of this via the TMZ article.

It has not been confirmed whether alcohol has been involved in the incident since her condition prevents doctors from performing any tests to determine if she was driving under the influence. She is currently intubated in the hospital but expected to live.

These are the vulgar license-plate requests the DMV has rejected

Published

Stay CL4SSY, New York!

The state Department of Motor Vehicles nixed 3,752 requests for vanity license plates in the last three years because it deemed them too raunchy, radical or simply ridiculous.

New York’s personalized plates go for $60 initially, and then $31.25 annually for renewal. You can get any plate as long as no one else has it and it’s not offensive.

Odds are a request for a plate that marks a wedding anniversary or shows your allegiance to a team — like METS86 — will pass muster with the DMV gatekeepers.

Vulgarity won’t get you to first base.

So plates with the phrase LFGM — the acronym for Pete Alonso’s “Let’s F–king Go Mets” rallying cry — did not make the cut.

And you won’t see anyone driving around with the custom plates MILFDAD, AS5M4N and WLHUNG.

The DMV also put NICEBUNS, FATFANNY, GOTAPOOP and BENDOVER in the rear-view mirror.

One player unsuccessfully tried to score the plate YESDADDY, to no avail.

The DMV also shot down such dark requests as DEADGIRL, GENOC1DE, S8TAN, DETONATE and MURDERM3.

Getting political is a dead end too — FJOEBIDN, FDTRUMP and CNNLIES were nixed.

LUDEDUDE, NARCO, GOT METH and BLUNT also went up in smoke.

Staten Island attorney Bill Dertinger said his blue 1995 Jaguar SJS was tagged with ESQLTD after his company and his 2014 Porsche had the plate GHOSTGTS because the sleek sportscar was white.

“The plates can make you stand out — which can be a curse or a blessing,” the 54-year-old Dertinger said. “Make sure you don’t cut anybody off.”

There must be a New York Jets fan playing referee at the DMV because a request for the seemingly innocent plate GASE was sidelined. Ex-Jets head coach Adam Gase had an offensive 9-23 win-loss record during his forgettable two-year tenure.

The DMV would not reveal who gives the final yea or nay.

“The DMV reviews all custom license plate requests and works hard to ensure that any combinations that may be considered objectionable are rejected,” said agency spokesman Tim O’Brien.

He said guidelines on what plate combinations are restricted can be found on the DMV website: https://dmv.ny.gov/learn-about-personalized-plates. Approximately 50,000 personalized and custom plates are sold per year, O’Brien said.
