Derek Jeter never won an MVP — but he should’ve

Published

on

Derek Jeter will hardly be the first player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame without a Most Valuable Player award to his name.

But should there be?

An American League MVP is just about the only thing missing from Jeter’s résumé as he heads into Cooperstown as a near-unanimous Hall of Fame selection. The former Yankees captain was a 14-time All-Star, five-time Gold Glove shortstop, five-time Silver Slugger, five-time World Series champion, World Series MVP, All-Star Game MVP and Rookie of the Year.

Jeter garnered MVP votes in 12 of his 20 seasons — with 1998, 1999, 2006 and 2009 among his strongest cases — but never got enough to take home the award.

The 2006 season was Jeter’s best shot at an MVP, but he came up just short to Twins first baseman Justin Morneau, who won by 14 points in a race that might have been looked at differently 15 years later.

Many of the traditional stats were split between Jeter and Morneau. The Yankees shortstop had a higher batting average (.343 to .321) and on-base percentage (.417 to .375) in addition to more runs (118 to 97) and stolen bases (34 to three). The Twins first baseman had more home runs (34 to 14) and RBIs (130 to 97), plus a higher slugging percentage (.559 to .483).

Morneau also left a lasting impression with the way he finished the season. After a slow start, he turned it up in his final 103 games, hitting .364/.414/.616 with 23 home runs and 92 RBIs to help lift the Twins to an AL Central division title by one game over the Tigers.

As advanced stats and analytics have become more prevalent in voters’ criteria over the years, though, it’s fair to wonder how the 2006 race may have played out in 2021. Stats that quantify a player’s overall value, like Wins Above Replacement (WAR), are not the end-all, be-all for current MVP races — the last two AL MVPs did not lead the league in WAR, for example — but they seem to now play a larger factor in voters’ decisions in general.

Jeter recorded a higher WAR than Morneau by a sizable margin — 6.1 to 3.8, per Fangraphs WAR (fWAR), and 5.6 to 4.3 per Baseball-Reference WAR (bWAR). Jeter’s 6.1 fWAR was second among all AL position players (behind the sub-.500 Indians outfielder Grady Sizemore’s 7.9) while Morneau ranked tied for 22nd.

Jeter and Morneau also had the same Weighted Runs Created Plus (wRC+) — which quantifies offensive value while adjusting for external factors like ballparks — of 138.

Morneau was one of three Twins in the top-seven vote-getters, joining Joe Mauer (sixth) and Johan Santana. Often that can hurt a player’s final vote tally, but Morneau still came out on top after receiving 15 first-place votes, eight second-place votes, three third-place votes and two fourth-place votes to Jeter’s 12 first-place votes, 14 second-place votes, one fourth-place vote and one sixth-place vote.

“While I know that voting for these awards is primarily based on differing opinions and statistical debates, it’s also part of what makes baseball such a great sport,” Jeter said after the results were revealed in 2006. “Winning the World Series for the Yankees continues to be my main focus. There is no individual award that can compare with a championship trophy, and I look forward to working towards that challenge again in 2007.”

Jeter had to wait a little longer to get another ring with the Yankees — while teammate Alex Rodriguez won his third MVP in five years in 2007 — but it finally came in 2009, the same season he finished third in MVP voting for the second time in his career.

That year, Jeter hit .334 with a 125 OPS-plus, 18 home runs, 30 steals and a 6.7 fWAR. He lost out again to a Twin — Joe Mauer, with a 8.4 fWAR, led the league in batting average (.365) and OPS-plus (171) and garnered 27 of 28 first-place votes — while Jeter’s teammate Mark Teixeira came in second.

Jeter’s other best chances to win an MVP came in 1998 and 1999 as he helped lead the Yankees to the first two of three straight World Series championships.

In 1998, Jeter hit .324 with a 127 OPS-plus and 30 steals to finish third in the voting while piling up a 7.5 bWAR. Rangers outfielder Juan Gonzalez won it (he hit .318 with 45 home runs, a league-leading 157 RBIs and 4.9 bWAR) while Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra (.323, 35 home runs, 7.1 bWAR) finished second.

Jeter enjoyed the best season of his career in 1999, when he recorded career-highs in batting average (.349), OPS-plus (153), hits (219), home runs (24), RBIs (102), runs (134), walks (91), bWAR (8.0) and fWAR (7.4). Still, it wasn’t enough in a crowded AL MVP race, which Rangers catcher Ivan Rodriguez (6.4 bWAR) won ahead of Pedro Martinez (9.8), Roberto Alomar (7.4), Manny Ramirez (7.3) and Rafael Palmeiro (5.2).

The company that Jeter is about to join next week did seem to recognize some of his best offensive seasons more than the Baseball Writers Association of America, which votes on MVPs. Jeter won a pair of Hank Aaron awards — created in 1999 to honor the best overall offensive performer in both leagues, as voted on by Aaron and a panel of other Hall of Famers — in 2006 and 2009.

Actress Anne Heche Suffers Severe Burns After Crashing Car Into Los Angeles Home

Published

on

Actress Anne Heche, known for her roles in such films as Donnie Brasco, Volcano and I Know What You Did Last Summer, was involved in a fiery car crash in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles on Friday.

According to TMZ, Heche was driving a blue Mini Cooper and had first crashed into the garage of an apartment complex. Residents of the apartment complex tried to get her out of the vehicle but she backed up and sped off.

Footage of Heche speeding down the streets of her neighborhood had been obtained by TMZ as well as her initial encounter at the apartment complex.

In the first clip, you can hear her car crash towards the end. It has been reported that the actress crashed into someone’s home, causing her vehicle and the house to erupt into flames. Heche suffered severe burns and was resisting being taken away in a stretcher. You can also view footage of this via the TMZ article.

It has not been confirmed whether alcohol has been involved in the incident since her condition prevents doctors from performing any tests to determine if she was driving under the influence. She is currently intubated in the hospital but expected to live.

These are the vulgar license-plate requests the DMV has rejected

Published

Stay CL4SSY, New York!

The state Department of Motor Vehicles nixed 3,752 requests for vanity license plates in the last three years because it deemed them too raunchy, radical or simply ridiculous.

New York’s personalized plates go for $60 initially, and then $31.25 annually for renewal. You can get any plate as long as no one else has it and it’s not offensive.

Odds are a request for a plate that marks a wedding anniversary or shows your allegiance to a team — like METS86 — will pass muster with the DMV gatekeepers.

Vulgarity won’t get you to first base.

So plates with the phrase LFGM — the acronym for Pete Alonso’s “Let’s F–king Go Mets” rallying cry — did not make the cut.

And you won’t see anyone driving around with the custom plates MILFDAD, AS5M4N and WLHUNG.

The DMV also put NICEBUNS, FATFANNY, GOTAPOOP and BENDOVER in the rear-view mirror.

One player unsuccessfully tried to score the plate YESDADDY, to no avail.

The DMV also shot down such dark requests as DEADGIRL, GENOC1DE, S8TAN, DETONATE and MURDERM3.

Getting political is a dead end too — FJOEBIDN, FDTRUMP and CNNLIES were nixed.

LUDEDUDE, NARCO, GOT METH and BLUNT also went up in smoke.

Staten Island attorney Bill Dertinger said his blue 1995 Jaguar SJS was tagged with ESQLTD after his company and his 2014 Porsche had the plate GHOSTGTS because the sleek sportscar was white.

“The plates can make you stand out — which can be a curse or a blessing,” the 54-year-old Dertinger said. “Make sure you don’t cut anybody off.”

There must be a New York Jets fan playing referee at the DMV because a request for the seemingly innocent plate GASE was sidelined. Ex-Jets head coach Adam Gase had an offensive 9-23 win-loss record during his forgettable two-year tenure.

The DMV would not reveal who gives the final yea or nay.

“The DMV reviews all custom license plate requests and works hard to ensure that any combinations that may be considered objectionable are rejected,” said agency spokesman Tim O’Brien.

He said guidelines on what plate combinations are restricted can be found on the DMV website: https://dmv.ny.gov/learn-about-personalized-plates. Approximately 50,000 personalized and custom plates are sold per year, O’Brien said.
