AEW Double or Nothing predictions: CM Punk’s moment highlights stacked card

Published

on

All Elite Wrestling celebrates its three-year anniversary with a loaded Double or Nothing pay-per-view that could shift the landscape going into an important stretch for the company.

CM Punk has a chance to become a world champion of the first time since 2013 and kick off the Summer of Punk. Wardlow’s star is set to be freed from MJF, there will be a clash between “pro wrestlers” and “sports entertainers”, a dream tag-team rematch and the inaugural winners of the Owen Hart Foundation men’s and women’s tournaments will be crowned. It will launch AEW into a summer that includes its crossover pay-per-view with New Japan Pro Wrestling, Forbidden Door, and end with All Out on Labor Day weekend. AEW’s pay-per-views usually come with a few surprises, so expect the unexpected.

With a jam-packed card set, The Post’s pro wrestling columnist Joseph Staszewski gives his predictions of what we will see at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday (8 p.m., Bleacher Report PPV).

Danhausen and Hook over Tony Nese and Mark Sterling (Buy In)

Hook hasn’t lost yet in AEW and this match certainly is not the place for it. Hope this ends with a double pin or Hook doing something to allow Danhausen to avenge his squash loss to Nese and give the fans something to cheer early.

Darby Allin over Kylie O’Reilly

Allin called out O’Reilly for injuring Sting’s leg in a steel chair and this match wasn’t made official until Friday. Allin will to avenge Sting’s injury. It’s uncertain if the injury is just in the storyline or legit.

House of Black (Malaki Black, Brody King, Buddy Matthews) over Death Triangle (Pac, Rey Fenix, Penta El Zero Miedo)

This feels like a tossup, but I’d lean toward AEW wanting to keep House of Black strong as it’s the newer faction and really hasn’t scratched the service of its potential in the company.

Jade Cargill (c.) over Anna Jay (TBS championship)

This has had so little build that just maybe AEW sneaks in a stunning loss for Cargill to an opponent she’s already beaten. More likely, Cargill — who just had a piece in The Players’ Tribune — gets pushed by Jay before ultimately winning and awaiting a potential challenge from Ruby Soho or Kris Statlander in the future.

Scorpio Sky, Ethan Page and Paige VanZant over Sammy Guevara, Frankie Kazarian and Tay Conti.

Having Paige VanZant lose in her in-ring debut seems out of the question. Since the stipulation is if Guevara and Kazarian lose they can not longer challenge Sky for the TNT championship, it immediately goes away once he drops the title so that shouldn’t be a concern for not letting VanZant get a win here.

Samoa Joe over Adam Cole (Men’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament final)

This will be the first ever meeting between these two, a match that originally seemed destined to happen in NXT. Instead someone leaves the first tournament winner. Cole likely will need to go back to Undisputed Elite business after this and a win keeps Joe unbeaten in AEW and a potential opponent for a world champion CM Punk. This one is one of the matches that could steal the show.

Ruby Soho over Britt Baker (Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament final)

AEW may reconsider this one after Soho was booed heavily while cutting a promo on Baker after defeating Kris Statlander in an awesome match on Rampage. For now at least, it appears AEW is intent on have Soho going on a revenge tour. She lost to Baker at Grand Slam last summer in a match for the AEW women’s world championship TBS champion Jade Cargill may be next.

Jericho Appreciation Society (Chris Jericho, Daniel Garcia, Jake Hager, Angelo Parker and Matt Menard) over The Blackpool Combat Club (Bryan Danielson Jon Moxley) and Eddie Kingston, Santana and Ortiz in Anarchy in the Arena

AEW hasn’t exactly explained what an Anarchy in the Arena match is, but I’d bet on it being exactly as it sounds – a falls count anywhere affair. For that reason, it opens the door for the “sport entertainers” from the Jericho Appreciation Society to one up the “pro wrestlers.” It likely will lead into a Blood and Guts match on Dynamite in the next two weeks before the Forbidden Door show on June 26.

Wardlow over MJF

The only question here is how fast does Wardlow win to free himself from MJF’s employment and how many times does he power bomb his soon to be former on-screen boss. This whole storyline has turned Wardlow into a rising star and he could leave an ever bigger one after this match. Expect some Shawn Spears interference, but it won’t matter.

The Hardy Boyz over The Young Bucks

Here is another one that could go either way. The Young Bucks won their last meeting at Ring of Honor’s SuperCard of Honor in 2017. The Hardys, who are talking about going on one last run, feel like they need to be victorious to establish them in the AEW tag team division. For that reason, I lean toward the Matt and Jeff to beat “Hardy cosplayers” Nick and Matt Jackson.

Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland over Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus) (c.) and Team Taz (Will Hobbs and Ricky Starks) (AEW tag team championship)

AEW has something special building with the new team of Lee and Swerve and it’s time to run with it. Jurassic Express’ reign, which began in January, has felt a bit lackluster. With the belts off them, AEW can start to give Jungle Boy a singles push and a potential match against Christian Cage.

Thunder Rosa (c.) vs. Serena Deeb (AEW women’s world championship)

Thunder Rosa cut one of the best promos of her AEW career on Dynamite heading into this match and really sounded like a champion. This feud will get her reign off to a solid start. These two likely will put on a wrestling clinic with Deeb just constantly being unable to put the champion away.

CM Punk over “Hangman” Adam Page (c) (AEW world championship)

It’s hard to see AEW get CM Punk to this point and not put the strap on him, unless they want to push this feud to a match with a stipulation down the road. Hangman is dealing with self-doubt again, this time channeling it through fake anger at Punk, who has kept his approach fairly low key. Unless AEW wants to have Hangman do something nefarious to keep the championship at all costs, he likely will make an emotional mistake trying to “destroy” Punk that costs him the championship.

on

Actress Anne Heche, known for her roles in such films as Donnie Brasco, Volcano and I Know What You Did Last Summer, was involved in a fiery car crash in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles on Friday.

According to TMZ, Heche was driving a blue Mini Cooper and had first crashed into the garage of an apartment complex. Residents of the apartment complex tried to get her out of the vehicle but she backed up and sped off.

Footage of Heche speeding down the streets of her neighborhood had been obtained by TMZ as well as her initial encounter at the apartment complex.

In the first clip, you can hear her car crash towards the end. It has been reported that the actress crashed into someone’s home, causing her vehicle and the house to erupt into flames. Heche suffered severe burns and was resisting being taken away in a stretcher. You can also view footage of this via the TMZ article.

It has not been confirmed whether alcohol has been involved in the incident since her condition prevents doctors from performing any tests to determine if she was driving under the influence. She is currently intubated in the hospital but expected to live.

These are the vulgar license-plate requests the DMV has rejected

Published

Stay CL4SSY, New York!

The state Department of Motor Vehicles nixed 3,752 requests for vanity license plates in the last three years because it deemed them too raunchy, radical or simply ridiculous.

New York’s personalized plates go for $60 initially, and then $31.25 annually for renewal. You can get any plate as long as no one else has it and it’s not offensive.

Odds are a request for a plate that marks a wedding anniversary or shows your allegiance to a team — like METS86 — will pass muster with the DMV gatekeepers.

Vulgarity won’t get you to first base.

So plates with the phrase LFGM — the acronym for Pete Alonso’s “Let’s F–king Go Mets” rallying cry — did not make the cut.

And you won’t see anyone driving around with the custom plates MILFDAD, AS5M4N and WLHUNG.

Crude meanings such as “MILFDAD” are unacceptable by the DMV.

The DMV also put NICEBUNS, FATFANNY, GOTAPOOP and BENDOVER in the rear-view mirror.

One player unsuccessfully tried to score the plate YESDADDY, to no avail.

The DMV also shot down such dark requests as DEADGIRL, GENOC1DE, S8TAN, DETONATE and MURDERM3.

Getting political is a dead end too — FJOEBIDN, FDTRUMP and CNNLIES were nixed.

LUDEDUDE, NARCO, GOT METH and BLUNT also went up in smoke.

Staten Island attorney Bill Dertinger said his blue 1995 Jaguar SJS was tagged with ESQLTD after his company and his 2014 Porsche had the plate GHOSTGTS because the sleek sportscar was white.

“The plates can make you stand out — which can be a curse or a blessing,” the 54-year-old Dertinger said. “Make sure you don’t cut anybody off.”

There must be a New York Jets fan playing referee at the DMV because a request for the seemingly innocent plate GASE was sidelined. Ex-Jets head coach Adam Gase had an offensive 9-23 win-loss record during his forgettable two-year tenure.

The DMV would not reveal who gives the final yea or nay.

“The DMV reviews all custom license plate requests and works hard to ensure that any combinations that may be considered objectionable are rejected,” said agency spokesman Tim O’Brien.

He said guidelines on what plate combinations are restricted can be found on the DMV website: https://dmv.ny.gov/learn-about-personalized-plates. Approximately 50,000 personalized and custom plates are sold per year, O’Brien said.
